What is the difference between solid opal, doublet and triplet?

A solid opal is opal all the way through. A doublet is a thin slice of opal glued to a dark backing, and a triplet adds a clear quartz or glass cap on top. Doublets and triplets look bright but cost far less and must not be soaked in water.

Why are some opals far more expensive than others?

Price follows the brightness and size of the colour flashes, the body tone and the pattern. A dark opal with vivid red flashes is the most valued. Thickness, shape and whether the stone is solid also count. A milky opal with faint colour is much more affordable.

It can. Opal holds water, and sudden heat or very dry conditions can cause fine cracks called crazing. Avoid leaving it in hot cars, near stoves or in strong sun. Most stable opals give no trouble with ordinary care, but they need more thought than a sapphire.

Are Australian and Ethiopian opals on this page?

No, they each have their own collection on our site, because buyers often search for them by origin. This collection holds other opals, such as fire opal and common opal. If you are unsure which suits you, message us from the Contact page and we will help.
