Stones

Jasper is a fine-grained, opaque form of quartz. Where agate is translucent, jasper is packed with impurities, mainly iron oxides and clay, which block the light and give it earthy colours. Red, yellow, brown and green are common, and many stones carry swirls, spots or scenic patterns that look like landscapes.

The local trade uses the English name. Our selection here is small and changes often, because we choose pieces one at a time for pattern and polish.

What to look for

Pattern is the main event. Picture jaspers can look like desert scenes, while red jasper is valued for a deep, even brick colour. Whatever the type, the surface should take a smooth, glassy polish without pits or soft spots. Check the back of the stone too, since cracks there can spread with time.

Be aware that many trade names ending in "jasper" are other rocks entirely, given the name because it sells. We describe each stone by what it is. Jasper itself is rarely treated, though some stones are dyed to brighten the colour, and each listing states the treatment status we know.

Red jasper is sometimes sold as Aqeeq. It is closely related, being quartz in both cases, but it is opaque where carnelian glows. If you want the classic translucent Aqeeq, look at our carnelian and red agate collections instead.

At 6.5 to 7 on the hardness scale and with no cleavage, jasper is very durable. It suits large men's rings, pendants and beads. Wash with warm water and a little soap. Polish lasts for years, and a jeweller can refresh a scratched surface cheaply.
