Safaid Topaz: White Topaz
White topaz is colourless, brilliant topaz, a crisp and hard-wearing choice for solitaire rings and earrings at a modest price.
Stones
White topaz is simply topaz without colour. It forms in clear crystals and cuts into bright, glassy stones that flash white light. Locally it is called Safaid Topaz. It is the natural starting material for most blue topaz, but left untreated it has its own clean, icy appeal.
Many buyers choose it as an affordable alternative to diamond for a solitaire ring or a pair of studs. It does not show the rainbow fire of diamond, but it has a crisp sparkle and plenty of brilliance when well cut.
What to check
Clarity is everything with a colourless stone, because there is no colour to hide inclusions. Look for a stone that is clean to the eye in the photos. Cut quality matters more than usual: a precise round brilliant or oval with good proportions sparkles, while a shallow cut looks lifeless. Check that the stone is truly colourless, without a brown or yellow tint.
Some colourless topaz is coated to create rainbow "mystic" effects; those coatings scratch and wear. Each listing names any coating we know of, along with the stone's treatment status.
White topaz has no special role in classical astrology here. It is mostly bought for engagement-style rings, everyday earrings or as a gift for a first piece of jewellery.
With hardness 8, it resists everyday scratches well. Like all topaz it has perfect cleavage, so a hard knock can split it. A bezel or six-claw setting protects it. Clear stones collect grease quickly and look dull, so wash it often in warm soapy water and dry it with a lint-free cloth to bring the sparkle back.
