Hematite takes its local name, Hadid, from iron, and it is in fact an iron oxide. That is why this 21.80 ct stone feels heavy in the hand for its size. It weighs 23.96 ratti and costs Rs. 3,750, about Rs. 172 per carat.
At 5.5 to 6.5 for hardness, hematite is softer than quartz, so keep it away from sand and grit. A large piece like this suits a men's ring or a pendant.
