Namak Mandi and the gem trade
Peshawar's Namak Mandi is known across Pakistan as a centre of the rough and cut gem trade. Stones from Swat, from the mountains of the north and from across the border in Afghanistan have passed through its dealers for generations. Not far away, the Qissa Khwani bazaar carries the memory of traders and storytellers who came through the Khyber Pass.
With a market like that on the doorstep, Peshawar buyers are often well informed. We have no shop or office in Peshawar, and we do not try to compete with a dealer's tray. What we offer is a simple online option: each stone with its weight in carats and ratti, its price and a photo, paid for when it arrives.
Stones Peshawar buyers tend to ask for
Interest here often turns to the gems of the region. Zamurd, with Swat's long reputation for emerald, is a frequent request. Tourmaline, aquamarine and peridot from northern Pakistan are popular with buyers who know their origins. Deep blue Lajward, the lapis that has long come from Afghanistan, is another favourite for men's rings.
When a stone has not been tested for treatment, our listing says so. That matters for emerald in particular, which is often oiled in the trade.
